HNWI immigration

Immigration consultant's notes. Some facts about the immigration of High Net Wealth Individuals.

Currently, there are about 14 million financially wealthy individuals (HNWIs) around the world, each of whose total assets exceeds $ 1 million. Among them there are about 560 thousand multimillionaires with assets of more than $ 100 million.

If we turn to the main motives of HNWI immigration, then these are:

  • safety, including environmental safety,
  • favorable conditions for the upbringing and education of children,
  • modern healthcare system,
  • growing economy
  • favorable climate, nature,
  • relatively low tax rates,
  • the presence of free territorial space.

Australia and the United States remain countries of greatest interest to immigrating financially independent individuals. The "leaders" in the outflow of HNWI are China and Russia. Moreover, if the main flow of leaving financially affluent persons from China is directed to the USA, Canada, Australia, then from Russia to the USA, Cyprus, UK, Portugal and the Caribbean.

A noticeable outflow of HNWI is observed from India (USA, OAU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), Turkey (Europe, OAU), UK (Australia, USA), France (Canada, Switzerland, USA).

In recent years, the influx of HNWI into the EU countries has fallen markedly. The main reason is the excessive tax burden.

It is believed that HNWI migration mechanisms are programs for obtaining residence permits, permanent residence, citizenship through investments, the popularity of which is growing especially among wealthy individuals from the Middle East and Asia. As a rule, programs require investments from 300 thousand to several million US dollars in local property, bonds or enterprises. Most of the invested funds are usually “repayable” after 5 years.

However, despite the constant increase in the number of such programs, only a small part (about 20%) of immigrants - financially wealthy individuals - move to new countries as part of investment programs. Most HNWIs still go through work, marital, and family residence permits.

It should be noted that a large number of wealthy individuals receive a residence permit in a new country, but in fact they never move there. Many of the HNWI representatives do not have a permanent shelter - a permanent residence, although they are property owners in different countries. The main reason - the desire does not become a tax resident of any of the countries in which they live.
